1. What inspires you to do what you do?
I have always created art and designs since childhood it has been my passion. My core skills are drawing and painting and I have worked in various disciplines in the art and design industry, I had my own business creating design-led products from my designs which were printed on t-shirts, giftwrap and cards.
For several years I worked as a specialist film and fashion make-up artist and bodypainter and I have also designed textiles commercially for Libertys of London and Tangs of Singapore.
I have been an artist all my life but did not have much time to paint when my first 2 children were small in London and my husband was travelling to Singapore every 2 minutes. Since relocating here I was able to join some artist studios and started painting again on canvas. I decided to paint my immediate environment, the buildings of Singapore even though I had not painted architecture before, I started painting my series of Singapore Landmarks in 2011 and over 2.5 years created 16 Large scale paintings of Singapore heritage and modern architecture. I was invited to exhibit them at The Fullerton Hotel in 2013 and due to many requests I have now produced a series of Singapore Landmarks Fine Art Prints.
I go to see Art exhibitions for creative inspiration and I go to Womens Business networking like ‘mumpreneur’ events to meet other like minded women in business and to learn how to improve my business and market my work effectively.
Over time I have become stronger with accepting the disappointments and focusing on the next thing, focusing on what I CAN do next……….I want to create textiles cushions, fabric and stationary with my designs.
I use Canva for designing my posters and postcards to publicise my Open Days at my studio on Malcolm Road.
I love Pinterest for gathering and saving my inspirational images and photos and I use Saatchi Online to list work as well as my website.
I have received quite a few orders of my prints by ladies recommending me on Singapore Expat Wives ( FB page) The power of a personal recommendation on social media has amazed me.
My husband and children – my husband Owen is a constant support and usually is the one hanging my exhibition and sorting out my computer nightmares! and my children inspire me to do well. They love the fact that I am an artist and my daughter will happily help me when I have an exhibition. She loves doing the labels for the paintings and helping out at the opening night.
Aside from that juggling my role as a mum with my studio time, my large paintings take weeks to months and need a lots of studio hours devoted to them, as do my 3 children who are 13, 12 and 3 -some days I feel if I am doing neither well !
I use an iPhone where i can check my emails even when I am out and about and at home I have recently transferred to a Macbook Pro from my notebook so I am still learning and sometimes struggling with the transition. I used Publisher on my old computer which is a easy to use design tool for promotional leaflets etc but it cannot be used on a Macbook so I am still using my old computer for that.
