It’s easy when we think of success to focus solely on the big successful companies that everyone knows about. We don’t always realize that often smaller companies are the ones that make a difference.There are many companies who boot-strapped their way to success that can provide key insights into what can make a small business thrive and maybe even grow into a bigger company someday.
1. Brain Tree
Brain Tree is a company that makes payments online and through mobile devices from companies all over the world. From the onset, they decided not to go with the route many businesses take, which is to provide free content and then to later flip it once a platform has grown. Instead, they charged premium fares for their services, which customer gladly pay for. In 2010, they generated $4.5m in income while doubling their customer reach. PayPal acquired them in 2013, supposedly for $800 million.
Envato was founded by three designers and a physicist, all who lacked any sort of business background experience whatsoever. Envato Marketplaces is a system of sites that enable creative people to sell their products. The top seller made up to $500,000 in sales in less than two years.
Carbonmade is an online service that creates portfolios for people to exhibit their work. It was originally designed to function as a tool to create an online portfolio for the founder, Dave Gorum. Partnering with Jason Nelson, a coder, they ultimately ended up offering the tool for the masses to use due to it’s popularity. The founders were able to give up their day jobs and work on Carbonmade full time in 2007, and today it us the base for 500,000 portfolios.
4. Neff Headwear
Neff Headwear was founded by Shaun Neff in 2002 in Utah. Their first products were hand-knit beanies that were sold at the Milo snow and skate shop. Neff was featured in Forbes as “The Cool Factor Business Model” in 2011. Shuan was featured in Sony Vaio’s “Make.Believe” advertising campaign along with several other young entrepreneurs and has had several media spotlights. Take inspiration from these examples. Bigger is not always better. These companies are shining examples of what can be accomplished with a little elbow grease and innovation. These companies serve as reminders of what can be accomplished when you work with the little you have and keep dreaming big.
