I started surviveSG.com last year, and there are definitely days when I’m so exhausted/ stressed/ grumpy/ highly charged….. and sometimes they are all rolled into one.
I’ve been asked before – what keeps you sane? What do you do to somehow manage to attend countless networking events, grapple with IT issues and stare at the accounts without falling apart? Being a classically trained pianist, I honestly can say I can’t live without music. Music is magic. it can instantly change any of the above “insanity pending” moods into feeling one of the following emotions: relaxed/ happy/ recharged/ pumped up/ I should receive entrepreneur of the year award because I rock.
So I thought I would share some of my favourite songs that help with that amazing transition. I’ve also asked other female entrepreneurs who have also passed on their songs that help them too – so you have a variety of music genres below!
Next time you feel stressed, just try click on one of the songs below before you throw your laptop against the wall.
1. Radiohead – “Everything in its Right Place”
This is my go to song. It never fails to lift me and there is something about the repetition of lyrics such as “everyday I wake up sucking a lemon” which instantly soothes me. This is especially good when you’ve just heard some very frustrating news. Listen and if required, repeat the song.
2. Calvin Harris – “Let’s Go ft Ne Yo”
Pretty obvious song to get you going – love the lyrics “Let’s go, make no excuses now, I’m talking here and now”. Sing along in a loud voice if you can (preferably in your home/ car/ private space).
3. Kylie Minogue – Love at First Sight
OK this is girly pop but works, and it’s Kylie! It has perfect first verse lyrics: Thought that I was going crazy, just having one of those days yeah”
There is actually quite a bit of Kylie that can help if you are a big pop fan– look up “Get Outta My Way” when something is annoying you , “Timebomb” is also great.
4. Spiderbait – Black Betty (or you can look up the Ram Jam original).
This is a great song to stomp your feet and head bashing – if you have long hair even better. Sing along to this and if you are still stressed at the end of the song then you are simply not human.
5. Cake – Short Skirt Long Jacket
Best lyrics: I want a girl who uses a machete to cut through red tape! HELL YEAH!
6. Lazy – Another Brick in the Wall (Pink Floyd Cover)
For those who need something a bit more chilled out.
7. London Grammar – Hey Now
One of my fellow entrepreneurs Samina from SAM.M (makeup artist) recommended this band to me recently and I haven’t looked back. Their music is amazing.
8. LL Cool J – Mama said knock you out
Ok this is for you RnB fans AND anybody who likes to use boxing as a form of stress relief (another way I stay sane). This was recommended by Irina Nilsson (photographer).
9. Mark Foster, A Team and Kimbra – Warrior
A mish mash of girly pop with an experimental twist. Anyone pushing you down right now? Listen to this song and get your fight on!
Listen to this when you feel you need some recognition for all the awesome work you do! Because who doesn’t live on the applause?!
There you have it. If you want to contact me to let me know what music works for you, or just want to share a coffee sometime, feel free to email me at email@example.com

Guest post written by Carmen Kot: Carmen is the founder of surviveSG.com and has lived in Singapore for almost 5 years. A typical story really, Carmen was constantly searching for products to help deal with the tropical climate in Singapore. After years of testing and listening to others who had also found effective products, Carmen bit the bullet and left the banking world to start up surviveSG.com. The store focuses on solving “first world problems” in Singapore such as frizzy hair, safe anti-mosquito products for the whole family that are DEET free (and work), cosmetics that stand up to humidity, fun umbrellas etc.
